Let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food.
There's even more value to the wisdom of the Greek philosopher's words today than when he first said them. We have a failing health-care system and skyrocketing rates of obesity in America today. Our children are becoming less effective, weaker, moody apathetic. Changes from our traditional food mores to avoid 'bad' foods have only exacerbated the situation. Despite truly amazing advances in science and pharmaceutical 'cures' we still suffer at an alarmingly increasing rate from many terrible illnesses of the western diet.
So what do you do? After trial and error my wife and I came to conclude that there's a way of eating which optimizes athletic performance, maximizes recovery and has been shown to increase longevity and health. People may call it Paleo, caveman, Primal, Evolutionary or Ancestral diet. Whatever you call it, we're doing it.
At heart it means eliminating elements of your food consumption that are linked to modern diseases like diabetes, obesity, infertility, cancer and mental illness. Good right? Not to most Americans. The foods you must eliminate are those adopted by our society, but not adapted to by our bodies, in the last few thousand years of human history. No more consuming any grains, breads, dairy, legumes, nightshades, and most sadly--no beer and no cupcakes. This elimination of neo-lithic foods is complemented by the even more essential return to eating more of the food we evolved to eat as a species before the agricultural revolution of our ways. So you eat unprocessed meats, organic greens, seasonal fruits and healthy saturated fats (like coconut and macadamias) to your hearts content.
Don't take my word for it. Be skeptical, take a hard look at modern industrial agriculture and decide for yourself how much those corporations care for your health. As you dig deeper you'll see some patterns, some very uncomfortable truths. Make your own choices, but be informed.
